Industry insight. Interviewing the Professionals

Are you interested in a career in Marketing, PR, Digital or Creative? Want to know how to break into the industry? Today we start our ongoing series on how people within these industries got to where they are today. We interview people to see how they got their big breaks and suggestions for people looking to do the same.

Meet Lucy. PR Account Executive for a specialist PR and Marketing Agency based in London..

What is your job title?

I’m a PR Account Executive for an agency in Central London.

How long have you worked for the business?

I started in May last year, so nearly 9 months. I love it!

What is the best thing about your job?

Everything. I love writing, so PR is the perfect job for me. I really like seeing something I have written being published and the reactions from people.

Give us a brief summary of your career so far.

I graduated 2 years ago with a degree in English Literature. If I am honest, I didn’t know what I wanted to do for a while so took on some temping roles. I then reached out to different agencies in the hope of gaining some PR experience. I loved every minute of it and the experience I gained really helped me get the job I have today.

When you were growing up, what did you want to be and why?

A ballerina of course. What little girl didn’t? I have two left feet so that career was quickly out of the question.

What do you think are the key skills from your past that enabled you to get the job you have today?

The internships 100%. Going into the agencies and being able to see the day to day running of a busy agency was invaluable.

What advice do you have for someone looking to start a career in PR.

Get your name out there. Make sure you people know about you. I was calling, emailing and connecting with PR Agencies for a long time before I was lucky enough to gain internships. I didn’t earn any money for a few months, but the experience I gained was worth its weight in gold.

If you could tell your younger self anything, what would it be?

Jaeger Bombs are NEVER a good idea!
