Interviewing the Professionals: Creative Agency Account Manager

Meet Steve, an Account Manager for one of Kent’s leading creative agencies

What is your job title?

I’m an Account Manager for a creative branding agency

How long have you worked for the business?

18 months, I joined as a Senior Account Executive with the aim of proving I was ready for the next step, within 6 months I was Account Manager

What is the best thing about your job?

The work and the team I work with. We’re all really passionate and pushing for better. I’m also very lucky to have great clients, we’ve earned their trust through delivering great work so we get to have fun with campaigns.

Give us a brief summary of your career so far..

I studied Media and Cultural studies at university, when I graduated I was desperate to gain experience and was lucky to get a job at a solicitors as a Marketing Assistant. But I wanted something more creative and joined a London agency as an intern. I spent two and a bit years there and was promoted through to Senior Account Exec. I was contacted by Curteis Webb and told about a creative agency that meant I didn’t have to commute but I could still work with exciting clients – the rest is history.

When you were growing up, what did you want to be and why?

I’d be lying if I said I had it all planned out, I wanted to be all the usual things a footballer, a cricket player, a bus driver. I didn’t really have any idea, it was from university onwards that I wanted to work in media, advertising or marketing.

What do you think are the key skills from your past that enabled you to get the job you have today?

I’m a good listener and relationship builder, this works with clients and across the agency. I’m good at getting the information we need to get the job right, I ask questions to really get to know them and their brand. Those relationships are crucial in the agency too – we’ve got a great creative team here so being able to really understand each other and get the brief right is key.

What advice do you have for someone looking to start a career in a Marketing Agency?

Get some exposure to a variety of disciplines; in a number of agencies if you can, I worked across different areas of the London agency and it really helped me to have a broad understanding of the bigger picture and how all the elements go together.

If you could tell your younger self anything what would it be?

Be yourself, be confident to voice your opinion but be humble enough to listen and learn.
